tiny libraries on state

we partnered with The City of santa barbara and Santa Barbara Public Library to issue a call for new public art “Tiny Libraries.” the winning proposal, by artist douglas lochner, exhibits on State Street until mid- october 2019.

Lochner has created 6 bright, life-sized, functional art “libraries” in the shape of punctuation marks.

the books are free to the public, and individuals may also leave books in the libraries to donate to other readers. The Santa Barbara Public Library will help stock books for all ages.

we’re working with the library and local artists to offer corresponding programs on State Street, such as print workshops, readings, literary dance, lectures and scavenger hunts with librarians.

This project is generously underwritten by the City of Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Beautiful, Downtown Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation.
