Come together: an exhibition of student artwork created in santa barbara county schools

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”  —Pablo Picasso

Come Together: An Exhibition of Student Artwork Created in Santa Barbara County Schools highlights the remarkable creativity and talent of students throughout the Santa Barbara County public school system. The exhibition celebrates the teachers, parents and administrators countywide who put tremendous effort into ensuring that children have the opportunity to create in the classroom.

Arts education fosters essential skills for our students and equips them to excel in the modern workforce. This Santa Barbara County Alliance for Arts Education, the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission and the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture commend those teachers who dedicate time and resources, often spending late nights or their own money, to provide our children with arts education. The tangible, positive results include improved student attendance, higher graduation rates and increased test scores. It has also been proven that arts bolster parent involvement and decrease disciplinary problems. Moreover, arts instruction raises student achievement in literacy and mathematics; this is true for English language learners as well as low-income students.

Many teachers across Santa Barbara County demonstrate a marked commitment to offering arts instruction. Lessons can be presented through traditional arts curricula as well as the creative integration of art into subjects such as science, math, and language arts. In many schools across the country, the STEM model has evolved to become STEAM as decision-makers recognize the significance of providing arts education.

Arts transcend culture, time, place, and socioeconomic status, allowing people from all walks of life to communicate with each other through images, music, and stories. The arts bring people together, and it is an honor to exhibit artwork from these participating school districts:

  • Blochman Union School District
  • Orcutt Union School District
  • Santa Barbara Unified School District
  • Santa Maria-Bonita School District
  • Santa Maria Joint Union High School District

The County Alliance for Arts Education, County Arts Commission and County Office of Arts and Culture encourage all schools to follow the lead set by the talented student artists on exhibit, and to seize the opportunity to utilize arts in the classroom.
